Welcome
Inspired Leadership is a blog to provide a collection of my thoughts on leadership. I have helped numerous executives including general managers, department heads and supervisors over the years with various HR and operational matters and I find myself being driven to help those in and outside of the companies I have worked for.
I often find parallels in the things we do in life so you will find a collection of things that drive me forward in my personal and business life towards continual success. I also found great success utilizing concepts found in the Secret, the 8th Habit from Effectiveness to Greatness and Eat that Frog so you will see that a large part of what you will read will have a good deal of its base from those concepts.

Something I Learned Today
I was talking with a pretty accomplished guy at the gym today and I asked him how he was doing as I normally do and today he said I am great! I said now that is different I usually hear that you are good what is going on that is great. He paused and said " I think that good has been used so much and and has become so common that it has become a term for being ordinary. We say how are you or how are things going or hows the family. And we all respond I'm good, its good or they are good without really thinking about it. he went on to say we tell our kids be good today or where you good today and to do a good job. He then said if you are asked if you want to be good or great which would you chose? So now I am always thinking of that because I want to be great.
I have read a similar concept to this a few years ago and I heard someone use this in a speech just a few weeks ago however it is always good to get a refresher.
So how is your day today so far? What do you want the rest of your day to be like? Yes that is what I thought.
Make it a great day!

Creating an enviornment of peak performance within your team
How do you get your team to perform at their best?
Two way communication is critical, ask questions and involve the talent around you.Help them come up with solutions, in doing so ensure that you demonstrate empathy & understanding of what the real issues are and implement their ideas whenever possible.
Some key learning's for me during this process is that first communication is the most important part of your job. Next you must ensure that your team achieves a greater understanding and is in alignment with their talent, passion and the organization to accomplish optimal performance. Always question your assumptions and ask yourself how can I effectively communicate clear performance expectations. Lastly examine what you can do to create greater organizational alignment. Doing so will create what is called a Career Best in your team.

Begin with the end in mind
Personal leadership - Mental creation proceeds physical creation.
Do you have a personal mission statement? Create one and apply it to your daily routine.
Envision and write down your desired results and values that are important to you in order to guide all of your activities and endeavors.
Paradigm shift - many people gain a sense of who they are from the opinions, comments and preconceived perceptions of the people around them. Further they allow circumstances, and the social mirror to mold and form who they are and what they achieve. The most effective people however, shape their own future. They mentally plan and then physically create their own results. What they have in their mind shapes their own future.

Put first things first
Personal management - Eat the Frog
To be effective it requires a balance of important relationships, roles and activities. So where does the frog come in? Well I'm glad you asked. Mark Twain once said that if the first thing you did each morning was to eat a live frog, you would go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that that is probably the worst that is going to happen to you all day long. Now putting it into perspective to today's world that frog is your biggest, most important task/project, the one you are most likely to drag your feet on. It is most often the one task/project that can have the greatest positive impact on your relationship/role and results at the moment.
So let me give you the first rule of frog eating: If you have to eat two frogs, eat the biggest ugliest one first!
To determine which one to eat focus on the truly important one saying no to the unimportant and then launch directly into it and discipline yourself to work steadily and single-mindedly until it is complete.

Something I Learned Today
My dad asked me to attend the Optimist Club luncheon today because he arranged for someone who we both knew from the gym to speak. I really wasn't feeling going to this luncheon as I had gone before and there is a very low networking opportunity from this group. However I value the opportunities I get to spend with my dad at age 80 so I gladly accepted the offer and since he was springing for lunch I couldn't go wrong :)
The speaker as I mentioned is a guy we have seen in the gym for years. We have never said anything much to each other aside from the normal "hi how are you" as we pass each other by the machines. I did notice quite a few years back that he was working out in shorts that appeared to be from the postal service and later I saw the matching top one day and that was about all I knew about him. My dad told me that he spoke to him one day recently and found out that he is a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force Reserve for the last 22 years and was deployed to Iraq for 3 years active duty and over the last 10 years has risen to the rank of Sergeant for the Riverside County Sheriff's Office. He is also a husband with three kids and is an assistant coach at one of the local high schools where his son plays who is finishing up his senior year and already has a couple of top colleges looking at him.
In his remarks at the luncheon I also discovered that he is the President of the Police Athletic League which provides programs for at risk kids. Needless to say this is a pretty busy and very successful leader at his job with his family and in the community. From his talk today I learned a daily habit that this gentleman does that I thought was worth sharing. He takes 20 minutes first thing every morning to do the following:
5 minutes - Clear it out. No work, No phones, No Blackberry, No family. Its all about you spending time to yourself. Take a walk, meditate, sit quietly and clear your head.
5 minutes - Be grateful. Think about all of the things you are grateful for and acknowledge them
5 minutes - Appreciate yourself. Use positive affirmations of all the things you are appreciated for.
5 minutes - Be prepared. Take the last 5 minutes to plan out your day. You want to have a road-map to follow so that when you begin your day at home, at work, on the road where ever it is, you can hit the ground running.
This may be familiar to some of you and quite frankly I have seen each of these in one book or the other over the years. However I have rarely seen them done together in this fashion and I have learned that we all can use a good reminder in our journey to success in all the things we do.

Be Proactive in terms of your Personal Vision
Individuals are responsible for their own choices and have the freedom to choose.
So what is the process for this principal:
Identify reactive tendencies and develop proactive responses.
Increase your circle of influence.
Become a transition figure to benefit others including yourself.
Exercise the human endowments (the seven habits) through conscious choice in decision making.
There are three key characteristics of proactive leaders
* They respond according to their values.
* They accept responsibility for their own behavior.
* They focus on their circle of influence. The things he or she can affect directly.

Sharpen the Saw
This is all about refresh, revitalize and renewal. Results require development of resources.
In the development of resources, write down your goals for what energizes you physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally. Once they are on paper go after them daily!
Lets break it down a bit further:
Physical - Where are you right now on proper nutrition, exercise, rest and stress management? Daily private victories in these areas is a victory over self and promotes self growth.
Mental - We increase mental capacity through reading, writing and thinking. Are you ahead of the curve in your area of expertise or do you blend in with everyone else?
Spiritual - I myself struggle with this dimension. What helped me is to realize that we develop spiritually from a diverse set of forums. Some examples are inspiring literature, meditating, praying and spending time with nature.
Social/Emotional - Read up on Emotional Intelligence. Where are you on self awareness, self management, social awareness and relationship management?
