My dad asked me to attend the Optimist Club luncheon today because he arranged for someone who we both knew from the gym to speak. I really wasn't feeling going to this luncheon as I had gone before and there is a very low networking opportunity from this group. However I value the opportunities I get to spend with my dad at age 80 so I gladly accepted the offer and since he was springing for lunch I couldn't go wrong :)
The speaker as I mentioned is a guy we have seen in the gym for years. We have never said anything much to each other aside from the normal "hi how are you" as we pass each other by the machines. I did notice quite a few years back that he was working out in shorts that appeared to be from the postal service and later I saw the matching top one day and that was about all I knew about him. My dad told me that he spoke to him one day recently and found out that he is a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force Reserve for the last 22 years and was deployed to Iraq for 3 years active duty and over the last 10 years has risen to the rank of Sergeant for the Riverside County Sheriff's Office. He is also a husband with three kids and is an assistant coach at one of the local high schools where his son plays who is finishing up his senior year and already has a couple of top colleges looking at him.
In his remarks at the luncheon I also discovered that he is the President of the Police Athletic League which provides programs for at risk kids. Needless to say this is a pretty busy and very successful leader at his job with his family and in the community. From his talk today I learned a daily habit that this gentleman does that I thought was worth sharing. He takes 20 minutes first thing every morning to do the following:
5 minutes - Clear it out. No work, No phones, No Blackberry, No family. Its all about you spending time to yourself. Take a walk, meditate, sit quietly and clear your head.
5 minutes - Be grateful. Think about all of the things you are grateful for and acknowledge them
5 minutes - Appreciate yourself. Use positive affirmations of all the things you are appreciated for.
5 minutes - Be prepared. Take the last 5 minutes to plan out your day. You want to have a road-map to follow so that when you begin your day at home, at work, on the road where ever it is, you can hit the ground running.
This may be familiar to some of you and quite frankly I have seen each of these in one book or the other over the years. However I have rarely seen them done together in this fashion and I have learned that we all can use a good reminder in our journey to success in all the things we do.
Welcome
Inspired Leadership is a blog to provide a collection of my thoughts on leadership. I have helped numerous executives including general managers, department heads and supervisors over the years with various HR and operational matters and I find myself being driven to help those in and outside of the companies I have worked for.
I often find parallels in the things we do in life so you will find a collection of things that drive me forward in my personal and business life towards continual success. I also found great success utilizing concepts found in the Secret, the 8th Habit from Effectiveness to Greatness and Eat that Frog so you will see that a large part of what you will read will have a good deal of its base from those concepts.
